Proletarian women’s rights activists aimed to build a socialistic structure distinct from the bourgeois norm. Examining Klara Zetkin or Rosa Luxemburg through this lens reveals that their personal lives, including private relationships, differed notably from contemporary bourgeois expectations.

August Bebel (1840 – 1913) expressed concern over Klara Zetkin’s relationship with a much younger Friedrich Zundel, believing it was detrimental to her political work. In the year 1911, Bebel reminded Zetkin of her public role and he expected exemplary conduct.

As already mentioned, we followed the call of Julius Motteler (1838 – 1907) – former first archivist of the Proletarian Women’s Movement – who said:
“Collect the pamphlets and publications for a history of the Proletarian Women’s Movement, as long as the documents have not decayed and blown away.”

We were listening to Julies Motteler’s cry for help, subsequently we did exactly what he asked for, more than 100 years ago.
